The last seven days

A day-by-day plan for the week before the paper.

What this page is for

This is a plan for the last week, not for the year. It assumes you have covered the syllabus once and now need to find and close the gaps. Every day has one full paper or one focused block, because the week before an exam is for measuring and mending, not for learning new material.

Day 1 — find out where you stand
  • Sit Paper I in one go, timed, with no interruptions. Ninety minutes.
  • Read the scorecard and write down the three weakest topics. That list is the plan for the rest of the week.
  • Read the explanation on every question you got wrong. This will take longer than the paper did, and it is the most valuable hour of the week.
  • Do not revise anything today. Today is measurement.
Day 2 — the weakest topic
  • Open the revision page for your weakest topic. Read it properly, including the traps.
  • Write that topic — 10 questions. Read every explanation.
  • Write it again — another 10. A different paper is drawn each time.
  • If the second attempt is not better than the first, read the page again rather than writing it a third time.
Day 3 — Paper II, then the second weakest
  • Sit Paper II, timed. Ninety minutes.
  • Add its weakest topics to your list.
  • Then the same routine as yesterday on the second weakest topic overall: read, write, write again.
Day 4 — the third weakest, and the word bank
  • Read the third weakest topic, then write it.
  • Then spend twenty minutes on the Malayalam word bank — പര്യായം and വിപരീതം are pure recall and the cheapest marks on Paper I.
  • Twenty minutes on the timeline. Read it top to bottom twice.
Day 5 — formulas and facts
  • Work through the formula sheet. Cover the right-hand column and say each one aloud.
  • Write Arithmetic and Geometry, 10 each. These two carry 14 of Paper II's 50 marks between them.
  • Read the one-line facts once, marking anything that felt uncertain.
  • Go back over only the marked lines.
Day 6 — a full rehearsal
  • Sit both papers, in the morning, with the same gap between them as on the day.
  • Compare each score with Day 1 and Day 3. Something should have moved.
  • Read the explanations on the wrong ones. If a topic is still weak, read its page again tonight — not tomorrow.
  • Read How to attack the paper before you start, and try the three-pass method today rather than on the day itself.
Day 7 — light, and early to bed
  • No full paper today. Nothing new today.
  • Half an hour on the one-line facts and the formula sheet. That is all.
  • Pack what you need for the exam tonight, not in the morning.
  • Sleep. A tired student loses more marks to careless reading than to anything you could learn in the last evening.
If you have less than a week
  • Three days: Day 1, Day 5 and Day 7 from above. Measure, patch the formulas and facts, rest.
  • One day: sit one paper in the morning, read the explanations, then the one-line facts and the formula sheet. Sleep early.
  • One evening: the formula sheet and the one-line facts, and nothing else. Do not start a new topic the night before — it displaces what you already know.
